How to disable the mail alert when running cron jobs (crontab)

Written by on August 22, 2011

By default you will always receive an email to your local email account whenever a cron job either does not work or wants to output something.
To deactivate this you have to do the following.

Try our online invoicing software for free

Send professional-looking invoices
Accept online payments with ease
Keep track of who's paid you

Start sending invoices

First open your cron jobs…
$ crontab -e

…and then either put:
>/dev/null 2>&1

&> /dev/null

…at the end of the line of the command.

Your cron job will then look like:
* * * * * /path/to/my/ >/dev/null 2>&1

* * * * * /path/to/my/ &> /dev/null

Save the file. Done.
